GROUP THERAPY
I consider my Group Therapy series to be a kind of Post Abstract Expressionist sensibility, with gestural mark-making, abstraction, and figuration, all are working together in the painting, emphasizing the surface and creating spatial tension (e.g., showing a perspective yet emphasis on the flat surface of the canvas). Contradictions are also created by using abstract gestural marks mixed with figurative narration. Making these varied concerns work together is the challenge of these kind of works.
The Freudian connection in these pieces refers to the sexual innuendoes suggested by the forms. Also the figures are in relationship with one another, which supports the idea of a therapy group.
